News Anchor: She sang some of the biggest hits of the 70s and 80s: and will always be known for her iconic role in Grease.

Sadly we learned today that Olivia Newton-John has died. She was 73.

Entertainment reporter George Pennacchio is here to remember this talented performer. George.

She was a warrior. Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully this morning at her ranch here in southern California.

She shared back in 2018 that she was receiving treatment for cancer at the base of her spine. It was her third cancer diagnosis, following bouts with breast cancer in the early ’90s and in 2017.

A beautiful singer with a beautiful voice: Olivia Newton-John charmed us as Sandy in the musical Grease on the big screen. She also has four Grammy Awards to her credit, and a slew of Top Ten Hit songs.

Her husband made the announcement of Newton-John’s death today on Instagram, writing:

“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John foundation fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.”

Newton-John began her music career in the early 70s.

But her career really took off in 1978 with Grease, in which she starred opposite John Travolta.

The role earned Newton-John a Golden Globe nomination.

Travolta said today,

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever.

Your Danny, your John!”

Newton-John was one of the first stars to publicly share their health crisis with the world. Her first breast cancer diagnosis was in 1992.

Her activism led to the creation of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to that.
