High School

Leah must find math very difficult. I knew this because she had yellow workbook on her desk. On the other hand, I was using the blue workbook. Before long it was the purple.

Later, in high school, I took algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. And I received straight A’s.

University

After graduating, I moved to a distant city to attend university. I excelled in calculus . . . and physics . . . and chemistry. After five years, I earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Stereo Factory

And so I moved again, this time to another, bigger city, and began working in a car stereo factory. I liked my job. It was challenging.

Unfortunately, after many years, the company closed.

So I returned home, and helped my father on the family farm.

Pumpkin Delivery

One day we had to deliver a truck load of pumpkins in another town, 50 miles away. The usual farmhand had been ill, so Jeff drove the truck.

After the offloading the goods, I stopped at a small convenience store to grab something to eat.

I filled my basket with items for lunch and brought them to the counter.

Jeff! It’s you!

“Jeff! It’s you! Do you remember me?” said the cashier. Who is this person? I wondered . . .

It was Leah!

“I didn’t recognize you; your hair’s different!” I said.
“Yes, I dyed it,” she replied.

And so we chatted for a while.

The Bill

Then she told me my bill was $21.53. I gave her thirty.
“Do you have $1.53?” she asked me.
“Uh, no. I don’t think so,” I replied.
I reached into my pocket and took out a handful of coins. She took several of them from me and handed me $8.50.

She did everything so quickly, I didn’t know what was going on. But I trusted her.
