Members

Blackpink was formed in mid-2016 by YG Entertainment. Their lineup consists of four members. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

1. Kim Jisoo Vocal

The oldest of the group is Kim Jisoo. She was born in Gwacheon, South Korea on January 3rd, 1995. She joined YG Entertainment as a trainee in July 2011.

Prior to her debut, she appeared in the music videos for “Spoiler” by Epik High, and “I’m Different” by Hi Suhyun.

2. Kim Jennie Rap / Vocal

The second oldest of the group is Jennie Kim. She was born in Seoul, South Korea on January 16th, 1996. She studied abroad in New Zealand during her early years of school, and returned to Korea when she was in junior high.

She became a YG Entertainment trainee in August 2010. When she was a trainee, she was featured in songs like Lee Hi’s “Special”, Seungri’s “GG Be”, and G-Dragon’s “Black”.

She also appeared in G-Dragon’s music video for “XX” or “That XX”.

3. Park Chae-young or Roseanne Park, Vocal

The second youngest member of the group is Roseanne Park, or Park Chae-young, also known as Rose.

She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on February 11, 1997, and moved to Australia when she was young.

She joined YG in May 2012, and was featured in G-Dragon’s song “Without You”, though she was credited as “? of YG New Girl Group”.

4. Lalisa Manoban Rap / Dance

The youngest of the group, the maknae, is Lalisa Manoban, also known as Lisa.

She was born in Bangkok, Thailand on March 27, 1997. She became a YG trainee in April 2011, and is YG’s first and only non-Korean artist.

History

Speculation for a new YG girl group began as early as 2012. Trainees Kim Eunbi and Kim Yuna were originally supposed to be members, but both left the company for personal reasons.

The final lineup of Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa, and the group name weren’t released until late June 2016.

They were YG’s first girl group since 2NE1 in 2009.

Blackpink has a double concept: their “black” songs are sexy and bad-ass, while their “pink” songs are more upbeat and cute.

Their debut single was SQUARE ONE, released on August 8th, 2016. It contains two tracks, “Whistle” and “Boombayah”.

Both music videos for these songs were released on the same day, and quickly gained millions of views.

Their second single, a sequel to SQUARE ONE, was SQUARE TWO. It was released on November 1st, 2016, with three songs: “Playing with Fire”, “Stay”, and an acoustic version of WHISTLE.

Music videos for Playing with Fire and Stay were both released on the same day, and also accumulated millions of views in a short amount of time.

Both SQUARE ONE and SQUARE TWO were part of the “black” concept.

On June 22nd, 2017, Blackpink released their third single, “As if it’s Your Last”, along with its music video. It gained millions of views in less than a day, and broke the record for the fastest K-Pop music video to gain ten million views in only seventeen hours.

This song is the first of their “pink” concept.

In May, YG announced that Blackpink would be making their Japanese debut on August 9th, 2017, with a mini album, and released a teaser of the Japanese version of Boombayah.

Please look forward to and support the album when it’s released!

This has been the history of Blackpink as of July, 2017.
