News Anchor: “So, here we go now, in Canada. Police in the capital city of
Ottawa have arrested nearly 200 protesters over the weekend.
They fired tear gas, they threw down dozens of vehicles, and shut down the trucker protest against covid restrictions.
One of the truckers is Derek Brouwer. He says his personal and business accounts were frozen because he was part of it. He joins me now.
Derek, good morning to you. What have you gone through, and what is your status today?
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “Good morning. Well, yeah, as you know we
went in to protest. And the police waved us into that parking spot . . .
And since then I haven’t heard anything from them or the government per se.
And in the end of it all, they’ve taken my truck — I don’t know where it is.
And yeah, then on Friday they locked up my personal and trucking business accounts and . . . [inaudible] . . . ”
News Anchor: “I had a little bit of a breakup at the end, there, Derek. I’m sorry.
They locked up your trucking accounts — which means you can’t work, is that right?”
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “That’s right. Then also we have another
business account too — And they locked that account up, too. And it had nothing to do with it.”
News Anchor: “Unbelievable, wow. Man, I’m sorry what you are going through.
Is this all over now? Is it done?
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “I don’t know. I don’t know where . . . I don’t
know anything. Nobody has called me or said what will happen in the future.
I don’t know.”
News Anchor: “Let me be sharper on the question: Is the protest over for now,
191 arrests, 76 vehicles towed?
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “Not that I know of. It seems like many of them are
gearing up even more. From what i heard in Calgary, yesterday and . . .”
News Anchor: “What would come next then, Derek? Another convoy or what are they talking about or telling you?”
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “I don’t know. As far as the protest goes, I don’t know what is going on there.”
News Anchor: “In the meantime, you need your livelihood and you are a long way from it. Who do you reach out to, what information have they given you about your accounts and business?”
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “Well, on my account when I called my the local branch, they gave me a phone number and I called it this morning.
And it was just someone higher up in the bank which won’t be working until tomorrow because we are on holiday today.
So basically the bank shut it down. And I haven’t been contacted by anybody.
So as far as I know I don’t know what will happen next.
News Anchor: “Do you know how many people in your same situation:
your buddies, friends or colleagues?
Derek Bouwer, Truck Driver: “I’ve heard of a few. Not close friends. I’ve heard that 70 were locked up last Friday . . . but I have not heard anything since on this.
News Anchor: “Derek, we’ll stay in touch with you and a lot of others, too, okay. Good luck to you. It’s a tough way to go.
